Open Space Gardens is a sustainable gardening company. We provide garden design, maintenance, installation, coaching and seasonal planters for residential and commercial properties throughout the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St Paul) metro region.
We take pride in creating beautiful gardens and planters for our clients. To us, every project is an opportunity to teach and encourage a love for the natural world and the wild creatures that also call our spaces home.

Our Philosophy
We focus on planting native plants to increase wildlife habitat and better cohabitate with nature. Native plants require less inputs and have deeper root systems to help draw down and filter stormwater runoff. They also attract pollinators and provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.
We believe that humans should live connected nature and we mix traditional and naturalistic gardening techniques to open up our landscape and connect it to the larger web of life that surrounds us.
Our sustainable gardening practices include:
- Chemical-free management of weeds and pests
- Creating soil health naturally without synthetic fertilizers - primarily using compost
- Planting native plants whenever possible
- Minimizing digging to help keep the soil food web in place
- Building food gardens in multiple forms to fit any space
- Installing lawn alternatives like “bee lawns” for diversity
- Employing manual hand tools and quiet and efficient electric powered tools
What to Expect
Our first step is to set up a time for an estimate, where we will come see your space, and discuss your goals. After this initial meeting we will draft up a customized plan and make recommendations for you that includes an estimate for the cost of our work.
Once you’ve accepted your estimate we can go ahead and schedule your project(s). We pride ourselves on customer satisfaction and are proud of our 4.9 star (out of 5 star) review average on Google. We would love to add you to our large list of satisfied clients!
Our Story
Starting in 2015 when our Founder Maddie Poling turned her passion for sustainable gardening into the business that became Sacred Space Gardens, we are proud to have helped hundreds of clients across Minnesota transform their landscapes into sustainable spaces. In 2024, Maddie handed the reins of the company over to Mark and Sarah McGuire, and we entered our next chapter of growth as Open Space Gardens. Mark, Sarah and Maddie (who remains with us as our founder) are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to promote sustainability in the landscaping industry and help you transform your outdoor spaces in ways that create beauty, habitat for wild creatures, and a range of other ecosystem benefits like cleaner air and water for our community.
