2022 is about Re-Wilding the Yard!

Hey guys, Maddie here. I haven’t posted a blog post in about 1 year. It was a very busy 2021 season and I was resting up until this point. Now I am ready to really dive in again. 2022 is going to be focused on making a big ol’ positive ecological impact. Our leading scientists continually tell us that we have a limited time on this earth until it becomes inhabitable, due to human activity and, I don’t know about you, but I have children that need safe air to breath and a hospitable atmosphere surrounding them. So I am going to fight like hell for our mother (earth) and my kids health. And the best way I know how to do that is by protecting our natural resources. Like planting for clean water, providing for pollinators and wildlife, and letting nature do what nature does best. Which is take care of itself, provide for wildlife, capture carbon, and clean its waters.

I’d say, if you’re reading this blog post you’re probably dedicated to helping the environment in some way or another. But this year I am going to challenge all of us to influence the people in our lives who need to hear it. The people who are outside religiously fertilizing their lawn. Or the people who do not have any real knowledge of the outside world. I don’t blame them, but I feel we have a responsibility to educate them on what is beneficial and what isn’t. I guess, I feel it’s my (Sacred Space Gardens) responsibility. I didn’t gain all this knowledge to keep it for myself, ya feel me?!

I’m going to keep this post short, because, frankly, I never read long blog posts. Instead I will leave you with some important talking points for spreading “the good word” of saving our planet, one yard at time:

1. We are experiencing a bug apocalypse. Without insects we all go bye-bye. The best way to provide for insects is to
   1. Stop spraying chemicals
   2. Plant beneficial plants, like plants native to this region
   3. Reduce lawn space to just areas that you relax/play/run in
2. If you are fertilizing or applying Round Up or Preen to your lawn/garden with synthetic fertilizers, chances are, it is creating toxic run off that pollutes our waters and kills aquatic species. The solution to this is natural fertilizers, the best of all time is organic compost. Lawns love liquid, organic compost. And so do all the little bugs and bacteria that need it, to thrive.
3. Take the time to learn about invasive species and remove them from your property. There aren’t a ton to learn – so just take the time to research it and start.

By teaching others on these topics we can facilitate the paradigm shift from manicured lawn, and non-native plants to beneficial native plants, relaxing a bit on the garden and lawn up-keep and create safer spaces for humans and animals. The key is being polite and gradual. Not rude or blaming. You don’t know, until you know.
