Should I Wrap My Evergreens This Winter In Minnesota?
Fall is upon us in Minnesota and a long time customer recently asked us this question.
The Short Answer is Yes
QUESTION
As the winter season approaches in Minnesota, one common question that comes up from clients is whether they should take extra steps to protect their evergreen trees and bushes.
ANSWER
The short answer is YES! It’s a great idea to wrap evergreens in burlap to protect them over the harsh winter months.
Unlike deciduous trees, Evergreens keep their leaves all year round which exposes them to additional risks in the winter months.
Wrapping broadleaf evergreens – such as Arborvitae, Juniper, Yews and Boxwoods – helps protect them against winter burns, large snow loads, road salt damage, and other wintery conditions.
This is especially true if your evergreens are:
- Young (1 to 3 years old)
- Located near a street or sidewalk that receives de-icing salt treatments
- In exposed areas without shelter from high winds
TIMING
The best time to wrap is late November into early December when average temperatures fall into the mid-30’s. And make sure to remove that burlap in early spring so they don’t overheat.
Pro Tip – In addition to wrapping, evergreens need plenty of water prior to freeze up because they lose moisture all winter long.
