We have been enjoying the Fall weather and colors while prepping gardens for Winter!❄️ What we do to prep your garden: 🍂 Cut back perennials like hostas and diseased foliage 🍂 Rake excess leaves into garden beds to insulate plants Native gardens typically need minimal maintenance.     What to cut back this Fall to prep your garden for What to cut back this Fall to prep your garden for Winter ❄️ It is not 100% essential to cut these back each Fall. However, it can help their growth in the Spring! 🌷 You can also consider cutting back Bee Balm/Monarda if the foliage is diseased. Bee Balm and Peonies often get diseased foliage in the Fall. This is extremely common, do not worry, cutting them back prevents this powdery mildew from coming back in the Spring. Just cut these plants back to the base, leaving about 8”-10” of stalk left. For Peonies, this stalk will help support Spring’s new growth. For Bee Balm, these stalks are hollow and can become habitat for solitary bees over the Winter. 🐝 Leave some plants up over Winter. Alliums, grasses, and Sedum provide Winter interest. It’s best to store seeds in a paper bag or envelope to allow airflow so if there is any moisture the seeds don’t rot or grow too early! You can sow these in the Spring or late Fall. The largest native moth in North America! They have a wingspan of 5-7 inches. As moths, they do not have functioning mouths or digestive systems. Their sole purpose is to mate and lay eggs.
