Do Prune: Deciduous trees (fruit trees, shade trees like oaks and maples) and shrubs (like dogwood and spirea) are great winter pruning candidates.     What to cut back this Fall to prep your garden for What to cut back this Fall to prep your garden for Winter ❄️ It is not 100% essential to cut these back each Fall. However, it can help their growth in the Spring! 🌷 You can also consider cutting back Bee Balm/Monarda if the foliage is diseased. Bee Balm and Peonies often get diseased foliage in the Fall. This is extremely common, do not worry, cutting them back prevents this powdery mildew from coming back in the Spring. Just cut these plants back to the base, leaving about 8”-10” of stalk left. For Peonies, this stalk will help support Spring’s new growth. For Bee Balm, these stalks are hollow and can become habitat for solitary bees over the Winter. 🐝 Leave some plants up over Winter. Alliums, grasses, and Sedum provide Winter interest.
